Solutia to Expand Nylon 6/6 Output For Merchant Fiber Spinning Market

SOLUTIA INC. is planning to expand nylon 6/6 polymer capacity at its Pensacola, Fla., plant by 45 million pounds per year. The expansion is meant to support the merchant nylon spinning industry and is slated for startup in early 1999. Solutia says its present capacity for product sold strictly as nylon 6/6 polymer is about 350 million pounds.

The company's total nylon 6/6 capacity, including spinning operations, is about 1 billion pounds, most of which is at its Pensacola site. The company would not disclose the price of the investment, but says it is on the order of tens of millions of dollars. "The nylon market is expected to grow as much as 6 to 9 percent by early 2000," says Ann McCorvey, general manager for Solutia's nylon, plastics and polymers...
