Government May Ease Methyl Bromide Phaseout.(subcommittee of House Agricultural Committee to reexamine 2001 phaseout date)

A HOUSE AGRICULTURE Committee panel is preparing to reexamine the controversial 2001 US phaseout date for methyl bromide, the widely used soil fumigant that is classified as an ozone depleting substance.

At a June 10 hearing, the forestry resource conservation and research subcommittee will consider possible alternatives. Farm groups are urging Congress to postpone the deadline, arguing that no adequate replacement will be available.

They contend that without methyl bromide, high-value crops such as tomatoes, strawberries and cotton will be put at a serious competitive disadvantage. A report by the Department of Agriculture in 1994 rated the value of crops that use the chemical at $2.4 billion.
