Advisory Committee Rejects Butadiene Regs.(votes to continue classification as probable human carcinogen)

A Science Advisory committee has rejected Environmental Protection Agency's plan to elevate the cancer classification of 1,3-butadiene to a "known human carcinogen." After reviewing a draft of a revised risk assessment, 11 of the 14 members of the Science Advisory Board concluded that EPA should continue to classify the chemical as a "probable human carcinogen," the ranking it has had since 1985.

EPA's office of mobile sources is considering whether to regulate 1,3-butadiene in vehicle emissions as an air toxic under section 202(l) of the Clean Air Act.
