Advisory Committee Rejects Butadiene Regs

A SCIENCE ADVISORY committee has rejected Environmental Protection Agency's plan to elevate the cancer classification of 1,3-butadiene to a "known human carcinogen." After reviewing a draft of a revised risk assessment, 11 of the 14 members of the Science Advisory Board concluded that EPA should continue to classify the chemical as a "probable human carcinogen," the ranking it has had since 1985.

EPA's office of mobile sources is considering whether to regulate 1 ,3-butadiene in vehicle emissions as an air toxic under section 202(1) of the Clean Air Act. The chemical is used commercially in the manufacture of styrene butadiene rubber and is one of the hydrocarbons emitted by motor vehicles.
