Green light from Swiss helps industry throughout cautious Western Europe. AN OVERWHELMING VOTE in a Swiss referendum on June 7 against a ban on genetic engineering has boosted hopes in thc biotech and chemical sectors that deep European skepticism about the benefits of biotechnology may be waning.

The Swiss voted two to-one against a ban on the production and use of trans-genie animals, the release of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and the patenting of genetically modified plants and animals and products derived from them. It was the world's first national referendum on genetic engineering.
