Praxair, Air Products Earnings Show Improvement for the Second Quarter.

INDUSTRIAL GAS manufacturer Praxair Inc. came in with 1 percent higher second quarter earnings of $108 million on a 5 percent sales increase to $1.2 billion. Operating profit hit a record $227 million versus $213 million in the year-ago period. "Results in South America are improving, despite a sluggish economy, mainly through aggressive cost reduction," says chairman and CEO H.

William Lichtenberger. "Praxair s business in Europe showed strong performance, and while results in the US business were impacted by higher power and distribution costs caused by energy disruptions around the nation, we were able to fulfil customer requirements." Salomon Smith Barney analyst Timothy Gerdeman has upgraded Praxair from "outperform" to "buy" on greater earnings...
