GNI GROUP INC., Deer Park, has been awarded a $9 million contract to recycle more than 3.4 million gallons of Vietnamera napalm warehoused in Southern California, along with the aluminum containers used to house it. The first shipment was sent to GNI last Monday from the Fallbrook Naval Weapons Support Facility at Fallbrook, Calif., 55 miles north of San Diego, where the material has been stored since 1973.
Thus the napalm finds a home in Deer Park following a troubled odyssey. The Navy is forced to find a recycling facility, noting in a statement that "after 25 years of storage, the canisters are beginning to degrade and leak, which could contaminate the environment."
