FOOD AND DRUG Administration has approved Nutrinova Inc.'s acesulfame potassium (Ace-K) calorie- free sweetener for use in liquid beverages. Nutrinova, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hoechst AG, markets Ace-K under the brand name Sunnett.
Analysts expect the sweetener to have a major impact on the US carbonated soft-drink industry, which is valued at $55 billion. Pepsico Inc. has already announced that it will market a new diet beverage, Pepsi One, using a blend of Sunnett and aspartame. Pepsico plans to launch the product in the fall.
The beverage industry is Nutrinova's biggest market in the US, a company spokesman notes. Beverages make up to 75 to 80 percent of the low-calorie sweetener market, which is valued at about $1 billion, according to the...
