MEMBERS OF THE House Agriculture Committee sharply criticized Environmental Protection Agency at a June 25 hearing for failing to seek reliable scientific data from the pesticide industry as it implements provisions of the new federal food safety law.

The agency's decisions on what pesticide uses may continue under the Food Quality Protection Act of 1996 must be made based on the "best available data," said Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.). "If implemented in a rational, scientifically justified manner, the FQPA will be a very good law.
