As PART OF ITS expanding focus on life sciences, E. I du Pont de Nemours & Co. has bought all of the shares of its microbiology subsidiary, Qualicon Inc., which develops and markets microbial testing products and diagnostic systems for quality-control and public health studies. DuPont's purchase of the Qualicon holdings from a Japanese automotive manufacturer, Tokyo Buhin Kogyo Co., and five Japanese financial institutions makes Qualicon a wholly owned subsidiary of DuPont.

"This full stake in Qualicon is a clear demonstration of DuPont's intent to grow life sciences through extension of its current businesses and acquisition of new ones," says James C. Porter, chairman of Qualicon. DuPont has also signed multi-division licensing agreements...
