Clariant, Ciba Abandon Plans For Creating Specialties Giant.

Due diligence revealed too many stumbling blocks. CLARIANT AND CIBA Specialty Chemicals have called off their proposed merger after the due diligence process indicated that a combination of the two companies carried too many risks. The companies refused last week to reveal the exact nature of the risks, except that they were "commercial, financial, legal and regulatory." The boards of the companies "considered the risks to be so significant as to undermine the future benefits and synergies as stated as part of the rationale for the planned merger," according to a joint statement.
