Sappi and Borregaard Launch Lignin Plant.

SOUTH AFRICA'S SAPPI LTD. and Norway's Borregaard Industries Ltd. have christened a new 55,000-ton-per-year lignosulphonate plant off the KwaZulu Natal coast of South Africa. The plant is the centerpiece of a 50-50 joint venture between the two companies dubbed LignoTech South Africa.

The facility, which has been under construction since December 1997, represents the Southern Hemisphere's first source of lignin technology, according to the companies. The plant will export 90 percent of its output, primarily to Asia and South America, in powder and liquid form. The product will also support Borregaard LignoTech's construction industry customers in Southern Africa, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific.
