BASF and Rhodia Expand Latex And Paper Chemicals Operations.

German company plans a major new plant in Finland. BASF IS INCREASING its European capacity for latex and dispersion coatings in response to stronger demand for paper chemicals. The company plans to build a 140,000-metric-ton-per-year paper chemicals plant in Finland, scheduled to start up in 2002.

However, the company has not yet chosen a specific site for the facility. The plant will make styrene-butadiene and styrene-acrylate dispersions, as well as formulations of process chemicals that will be sold primarily in Finland and Sweden. BASF is also establishing a new dispersions center at Ludwigshafen, which is expected to reduce the capacity of the German site.
