US petrochemicals companies' interest in Europe is fuelled by more than an eye for a good investment Between Huntsman buying Teesside and KoSa getting Trevira it seems that US petchem producers have singled out Europe as an attractive area for investment. However scratch a little deeper and the story changes.

Europe as a region in itself does not seem to be the primary reason for US interest. What is important is Europe's linchpin position within an increasingly globalising market. Building the global position is more important than just 'getting into Europe'. And assets in Europe are plentiful and cheap right now with the domestic industry undergoing rapid restructuring and focusing on core competencies. There are certainly opportunities here,...
