Canadian Producers Get Ready For Y2K.

THE CANADIAN subsidiary of Dow Chemical Company will temporarily halt or scale back its operations on New Year's Eve as a precaution against potential Y2K problems. The company joins Nova Chemical of Calgary, Alberta, and Methanex Corporation of Vancouver, B.C., as Canadian companies that have announced steps to idle or cut back their operations to avoid Y2K-relared problems.

Several US companies--Rhone-Poulenc, DuPont, Union Carbide and Ashland Chemical--announced similar moves in late September. Barbara Mayben of Dow says the temporary production halts will be part of a global action by the company that will affect fewer than 10 percent of its 450 worldwide plants during the date transition.
