BERLIN, GERMANY-BASED Schering AG is in talks with Mitsui Chemicals to buy Mitsui Pharmaceuticals Inc. Mitsui Chemicals holds an 82 percent stake in the drug company. A Schering spokesperson emphasizes that the purchase is still only in the discussion stage and the company is exploring other options for strengthening its position in the region.
The company says the purchase is aimed at developing several of its product segments in Japan. Currently, 85 percent of Schering's Japanese revenues are derived from sales of diagnostics. The company plans to expand its sales in other segments, such as therapeutics and female healthcare. Worldwide, the company's portfolio is balanced with each of these segments accounting for roughly one-third of its sales.
