ZOLTEK COMPANIES Inc. posted a loss of $700,000 during its fiscal fourth quarter, which ended September 30, 1999, down from a profit of $12 million in the year-ago period on 9 percent lower sales of $18 million. For the full 1999 fiscal year, the company lost $2.6 million versus a profit of $9.6 million in fiscal 1998, as sales plunged 18 percent to $68.5 million.

However, sales of carbon fibers, Zoltek's core products, were up 33 percent to $7.71 million, compared to the fourth quarter of fiscal 1998. The company says the increase is due to a variety of factors, including improved demand in the conductive plastics market, stronger sales in new and developing markets, and increased sales to various European customers.
