EPA Posts a Record Year for Enforcement Actions.

FISCAL 1999 was a record year for enforcement actions and penalties for the Environmental Protection Agency. Administrator: Carol Browner says that $166.7 million in civil penalties were assessed and another $3.6 billion in enforcement actions were announced for environmental cleanup, pollution control equipment and improved monitoring.

Both figures set new agency records. Civil penalties were 60 percent higher than in 1998, and enforcement actions rose 80 percent.
