US Greenhouse Gas Emissions Increase Slightly, EPA Reports.(Brief Article)

US EMISSIONS of greenhouse gases rose 0.5 percent from 1997 to 1998, according to a draft report released for public comment by the Environmental Protection Agency. Total emissions--including carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons and sulfur hexafluoride--rose from 1.827 billion metric tons to 1.834 billion.

The study shows that the largest source of greenhouse gases is carbon dioxide from the combustion of fossil fuels. That accounted for 80 percent of US emissions in 1998. Fossil fuel combustion was also responsible for 80 percent of the growth of greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 to 1998. Between 1990 and 1998, transportation emissions rose 14 percent and total highway miles traveled climbed 21 percent....
