AKZO NOBEL'S chemicals business has posted the best quarterly performance in its history. During the first quarter, its sales rose 15 percent to [epsilon]1.1 billion ($1 billion), and its operating income climbed 13 percent to [epsilon]126 million. The company's volume sales went up 4 percent and its selling prices rose 3 percent, helping it to achieve a sales margin of 11 percent.

Higher earnings were returned by the businesses in base chemicals, surface chemistry and functional chemicals.
