ELI LILLY & Co. has developed a promising new drug, recombinant human activated protein C (APC), to treat sepsis, a previously untreatable condition. Although Lilly has yet to file with the Food and Drug Administration, analysts expect approval by early 2002, which could cushion the blow when the company's patent on Prozac expires next August.

There is no pharmaceutical treatment for sepsis, although its strikes 700,000 people in the US every year and kills 600 to 1,000 every day. Because sepsis is often associated with an infection during a medical procedure, its incidence is expected to rise as medicine advances.
