Difficult business conditions are driving cansolidation and restructuring.

Two major deals in December--Sasol's acquisition of Condea and Huntsman's purchase of Albright & Wilson Surfactants Europe--were an appropriate finish to a year when the manufacturers of commodity anionic surfactants found themselves catching it from both sides. Not only did retail pressures continue cutting into margins, but raw materials and energy prices also shot up as crude oil and natural gas hit record highs. Faced by such challenges, surfactant manufacturers are either turning away from the commodity anionics or consolidating their position through a stream of disposals, acquisitions and mergers.
