THE SENATE voted 99-0 last week to unanimously confirm former New Jersey governor Christine Todd Whitman as administrator of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). "You can have a clean environment and a strong economy, and Governor Whitman has proven that," Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Chairman Bob Smith (R-N.H.) said during a brief floor debate.

Mrs. Whitman, selected to head the agency on December 22 by President Bush, received widespread support from the business communities.
