AstraZeneca has been granted FDA approval for Nexium (esomprazole magnesium) for heartburn and other symptoms associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and for the healing of erosive esophagitis. Nexium is an optical isomer of AstraZeneca's Losec/Prilosec (omeprazole), a proton pump inhibitor that will lose patent protection in October.

Losec/Prilosec brought in $6.26 billion in revenues in 2000.
