IN ITS LARGEST investment in China to date, AstraZeneca PLC has opened a new $100 million pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in Wuxi New District, near Shanghai. The plant will manufacture the stomach acid treatment Losec/Prilosec/Omepral (omeprazole), the heart disease drug Piendil (felodipine), and asthma treatments.
Losec is currently manufactured in a Swedish facility with total capacity of seven billion tablets. Construction of the new plant began in 1998. Estimated annual production capacity will be 1.5 billion tablets, 70 million capsules, 2.5 million bottles of oral solutions, 4 million bottles of dose-aerosols/sprays, and 6 million vials of sterile products.
