Europeans Question Impact of Major Petrochem Expansions in Middle East.(Statistical Data Included)

THE PLANS FOR a major increase in olefins and derivatives capacity in the Middle East are leading to doubts about the extent of needed petrochemicals expansions in Europe.

European petrochemicals producers are facing the prospect of at least 7 million metric tons per year of ethylene capacity coming on stream in the Middle East--the vast majority in Iran and Saudi Arabia--early in the second half of the current decade.

Furthermore, a large proportion of the companies investing in these projects will be producers already heavily involved in the European market. As a result, it is likely that substantial amounts of the output from the new Middle East petrochemicals plants could be exported to Europe.
