OVER THE PAST five years, the polycarbonate demand growth has been driven by the boom in optical media, namely CDs and DVDs. Although demand for audio CDs and CD-ROMs is expected to decline, the market for recordable and rewritable CDs and DVDs is projected to increase tremendously and fuel growth in poly-carbonate.

The polycarbonate market for optical media has grown from roughly 110,000 tons in 1995 to a total of 385,000 tons in 2000, according to recent Bayer AG estimates. Based on an estimated yearly growth rate of 20 percent per year, the consumption of polycarbonate is expected to double within five years to reach 770,000 tons in 2005.
