Amgen Reports Solid 2Q Results Despite Delay of Aranesp US Launch.(Brief Article)

BIOTECH LEADER Amgen reported solid second quarter earnings, beating analysts estimates on sales of its top-selling anemia drug Epogen (epoetin alfa) and immunity-boosting drug Neupogen (filgrastim). Key to the company s future growth is Aranesp (darbepoetin alfa), its next-generation anemia drug.

Amgen s net income rose to $322 million, or 30 cents a share, from $303 million, or 23 cents a share, in the year-ago period, beating Prudential Financial and SG Cowen estimates by one cent and two cents, respectively. Total product sales rose 6 percent to $859 million. Epogen/Aranesp sales rose 5 percent to $518 million, compared with Epogen-only sales in the year-ago period. Neupogen sales rose 10 percent to $340 million.
