Amgen's Epogen Successor Aranesp Gets FDA Approval.(Brief Article)

IN A MAJOR boost to its drug franchise, Amgen has received US marketing authorization for Aranesp (darbepoetin alfa), the successor to its top-selling anemia drug Epogen (epoetin alfa).

Analysts see strong potential for Aranesp. Deutsche Bane Alex. Brown estimates third-full-year sales of Aranesp at $1.5 billion. Aranesp, the tradename for NESP (novel erythropoiesis stimulating protein), is a second-generation hyperglycosylated erythropoietin (EPO). Amgen owns full rights to Aranesp in all US and European markets. Amgen launched Aranesp in Europe in the second quarter with a label similar to the US label.
