BARR LABORATORIES Inc. reported solid first quarter fiscal 2002 earnings, beating analysts' estimates on sales of its generic Prozac (fluoxetine) and breast cancer drug tamoxifen. Barr completed its merger with Duramed Pharmaceuticals Inc., accretive to 2003, which also reported solid third quarter earnings.

Barr's net income rose to $67 million, or $1.80 a share, from $10.4 million, or 28 cents a share in the year-ago period, beating Banc of America Securities and Salomon Smith Barney estimates by 5 cents and 2 to 3 cents, respectively. Fluoxetine posted sales of $175 million, with tamoxifen sales up 44 percent to S89.9 million. The drugs total 86 percent of Barr's product sales.
