Although they now represent only a small percentage of all pharmaceuticals, biotech-based drugs are projected to show exponential growth. Cynthia Challenger reports. Although sales of biotechnology-based drugs still are a small percentage of overall pharmaceutical sales, their importance is growing.

Sales of the top 14 leading biotech drugs rose to over $7 billion in 2000, and many of the newest pipeline candidates are biotech products, several of which are first-in-class type drugs that have strong market potential. Sales of biotechnology drugs are projected to increase from $14.3 billion in 1998 to $48.5 billion in 2010, an increase of roughly 340 percent, according to Decision Resources, a Waltham, Mass.-based market research and consulting firm....
