THROUGHOUT MOST of the world, petrochemicals demand for propylene is growing faster than the demand for ethylene, In a study of the global propylene industry, Chemical Market Associates Inc. (CMAI), Houston, says the construction of new steam crackers to meet the demand for ethylene will not satisfy propylene demand, and other sources of supply will be needed, especially between 2005 and 2015.

Global production of polymer-grade and chemical-grade (PG/CG) propylene is around 50.2 million tons per year, according to CMAI. Roughly 70 percent of that propylene is produced by steam crackers, 28 percent by refinery FCC units, and 2 percent through propane dehydrogenation or metathesis.
