GENZYME Corp.(acquires assets of Pharming NV)(Brief Article)

GENZYME Corp. has acquired certain assets of Pharming NV, a Belgium-based Pharming Group subsidiary operating under a court supervised receivership, including a 70,000 square foot cGMP protein manufacturing unit being built, and a transgenic human alpha-Glucosidase pilot plant in Geel, Belgium.

Genzyme will initially use the plant for securing clinical supply hut plans to expand protein production capacity in Geel and begin full manufacturing operations there in 2003. It has suspended plans for a recombinant protein unit in Framingham, Mass.
