THE NUCLEOTIDES industry is in flux, with one major producer deciding to severely reduce production just as others are reporting improving business conditions. The market for the flavor enhancers appears to be bounding back after a decade of price erosion and a period of overcapacity.

Kyowa Hakko Kogyo Co. Ltd. recently announced plans to dramatically pare back nucleotides production. Though the company has not provided specific details, commenting only that "total manufacture and sales volume of Kyowa Hakko group will decrease," there is speculation that nucleotides operations at its plant in Japan will be completely discontinued.
