DaimlerChrysler has selected Fortron Industries' 1140L4 linear polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) when it switched from steel to plastic fuel rails in its 2.7 liter V-6 engines. Fortron claims the new rails weigh 25 percent less and cost 30 percent less than those they replaced. Much of the savings occurred by consolidating the seven components in the metal rail into a single molded component, which greatly simplified production. "We chose Fortron PPS because of its long track record in auto engine and fuel applications and because our experience with it showed it had the chemical, thermal and mechanical capabilities we needed," says Mark Cerny, engineering supervisor in premium vehicle power train adaptation...
