BASF AND BASELL have revealed that they have shut down a 410,000 metric ton-per-year styrene plant at Wesseling, Germany, following a five-year low in ethylene output, according to quarterly figures. Analysts predict there will be further closures of petrochemicals plants since the present downturn in demand provides opportunities for rationalization.

"People will be looking hard at their assets," says Jon Warnke, a consultant at Chem Systems, London. "Old or small plants and those m locations with uncompetitive feedstock supplies will be under threat." Basell, a 50/50 joint venture between BASF and Shell, operated the styrene plant, which was shut down a month ago. Its output went to BASF for captive use since Basell does not have a styrenics...
