TO FEND OFF unwelcome takeover bids, Rhodia is sticking closely to a strategy of cross-linking technologies within the group and building close R&D partnerships with customers. Last week, the company reiterated its commitment to its new business model after revealing a net loss of [euro]213 million ($190 million) in 2001, mainly because of high restructuring costs.

Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) dropped 38 percent to [euro]633 million on a 2-percent drop in sales to [euro]7.3 billion,. The company also revealed plans to close 19 plants throughout the world to make enough divestments to raise [euro]500 million for the reduction of debts.
