Senate kills energy bill's ethanol amendment.

THE SENATE LAST week killed a last-ditch effort by anti-ethanol forces to strip provisions in sweeping energy legislation that would establish a national renewable fuels standard. In a key vote before final passage, the Senate voted 69-30 to defeat an amendment by Senator Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) that would have eliminated the renewable fuels requirement, which is expected to triple the amount of ethanol used in cleaner-burning gasoline over the next decade.

The measure would require the use 2.3 billion gallons of ethanol by 2004 and 5 billion gallons by 2012. Last year, the US consumed about 1.7 billion gallons of ethanol, mostly in the Midwest. Sens. Schumer and Diane Feinstein (D-Calif.) object to the ethanol mandate, arguing it will...
