US MANUFACTURERS deserve credit for steadily reducing the amount of toxic chemicals released into the environment, the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) says in response to an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) report showing a 9 percent decline in pollutant emissions. "The report echoes what we've been saying for years," says NAM executive vice president Michael Baroody.

"The sky is not falling. Things are in fact getting better. "Our environment is much cleaner today than it was 30 years ago." EPA'S Toxic Release Inventory report shows that US industries released a total of 7.1 billion pounds of toxic chemicals directly to the air, land, and water in 2000, a 700 million pound decrease from the previous year.
