ALPHARMA Inc. was one of six companies to achieve FDA approval for its generic version Johnson & Johnson's 50 mg pain drug Ultram (tramadol). Watson Pharmaceuticals Inc., Mylan Laboratories Inc., Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd., Eon Labs Inc. and Caraco Pharmaceutical Laboratories Ltd. also received approval.

Brand sales of Ultram were roughly $590 million in 2001. DR. REDDY'S Laboratories Ltd. has filed Paragraph IV certifications on the two Orange Book patents listed for Pfizer Inc.'s hypertension and angina drug Norvasc (amlodipine besylate), a calcium channel blocker.
