THE AUTO CATALYST market is seeing some unexpected competition from a privately held start-up company, Catalytic Solutions Inc.'s (CSI), Oxnard, Calif, which is offering catalyst technology that uses reduces precious metals loading and therefore provides a more cost-effective solution.

CSI's "new-generation (ceramic oxide)" catalytic converter technology that uses 50 to 80 percent less precious metals or platinum group metals (PGMs) has rekindled investor interest. If CSI comes through with this promise, it "could represent significant cost savings for auto producers," says Lehman Brothers analyst Timothy Gerdeman.
