SWEETENERS Tate & Lyle PLC's product sucralose has received the backing of the European Commission's Scientific Committee on Food (SCF). Sucralose has a sweetness potency of around 600 to 650 times that of sucrose, and is the only zero-calorie sweetener derived from sugar. The SCF has also given a thumbs-up to another sweetener, an aspartameacesulfame salt. The committee felt that this product was covered by the evaluations of two already-approved sweeteners, aspartame and acesulfame K. The acceptance proposal for sucralose and the aspartame-acesulfame salt still needs to be approved by the European Parliament and the European Council.
