PRESIDENT GEORGE W Bush last week signed industry-supported legislation restoring the White House's authority to negotiate new international trade agreements. "Trade is an important source of good jobs for our workers, a source of higher growth for our economy," President Bush remarked as he enacted the trade promotion authority (TPA) bill into law.

"It creates new opportunities for our entrepreneurs. Trade expands choices for America's customers and raises living standards for our families," he added at a White House ceremony. The Senate approved the TPA bill by a vote of 66-34 on August 1, five days after the measure squeaked through the House of Representatives by just three votes, 215-212.
