THE FOOD and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved Neotame, a new high-intensity sweetener (HIS) that is so strong it practically blows the currently available products out of the water with its sweetening punch. The new addition underscores heightened competition in the HIS market over the last few years as consumer demand for safe and better tasting low calorie products increases. Yet just how effective Neotame will be at winning over fickle consumers and cautious food and beverage companies remains to be seen.
