Six Sigma, the quality initiative pioneered by Motorola in the 1980s, has since been adopted by many of the major chemical companies looking to streamline their business operations and improve margins. A Six Sigma business strategy relies on statistical tools and specifically designed processes and methods to achieve measurable goals for increased efficiency and productivity, reduced waste and enhanced products and processes. A review of Six Sigma implementation by some of the major chemical companies demonstrates improved profitability, though challenges include the allocation of resources for training and sustaining the business processes needed to maintain the program.
