SENATOR RICHARD Durbin (D-Ill.) has introduced legislation that would require genetically modified (GM) animals intended for food use to undergo an environmental review before receiving federal approval. The bill would also require food producers to develop plans to address any potential negative environmental effects associated with the introduction or use of GM animals.

"Environmental issues have been identified as a major science-based concern associated with genetically engineered animals," Senator Durbin said in a statement.
