NOVARTIS AG is reviving the name Sandoz as an umbrella brand for its global operations in generic medicines. Since the merger of Sandoz and Ciba-Geigy to form Novartis seven years ago, the 117 year-old Sandoz name has been used on only a few Novartis medicinal products, mostly over-the-counter drugs.

Novartis now plans to exploit the brand awareness created by the Sandoz name to strengthen its position in the generics market. Through a series of acquisitions, Novartis has become second in the global generics sector behind Teva Pharmaceuticals Industries Ltd. of Israel.
