A BIPARTISAN group of farm-state senators has reintroduced legislation that would ban methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) nationwide and establish a renewable fuels standard (RFS). Supporters say the measure, sponsored by Senators Tom Daschle (DS.D.), Richard Lugar (R-Ind.) and 12 other senators, would nearly triple the nation's use of domestic renewable fuels made from products such as corn and soybeans.

The legislation is identical to the renewable fuels agreement that received the support of 69 senators and the White House during the last session of Congress.
