AKZO NOBEL's struggling pharmaceutical operation is cutting production of a new contraceptive because of lower than expected sales in the US. Organon International, the company's main pharmaceutical subsidiary, is switching to other work 60 of the 100 staff members at its plant at Oss, the Netherlands, which makes NuvaRing, a low-dose hormonal contraceptive vaginal ring.

"Hopefully this will be only a temporary move," says an Organon spokesperson. "Sales of NuvaRing, which we launched last year, have been slower than anticipated in the US but have been doing well in Europe."
