A NEW active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) plant to be built in Minden, Germany, demonstrates the seriousness of BASF AG's declared intention to become a major player in the custom manufacturing of pharmaceuticals. The company has committed an eight-figure sum to building the new multipurpose facility.

Current custom manufacturing activities, by contrast, occupy resources freed by the sale of BASF's pharmaceutical business to Abbott Laboratories in 2000.
