A NEW active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) plant to be built in Minden, Germany, demonstrates the seriousness of BASF AG's declared intention to become a major player in the custom manufacturing of pharmaceuticals. The company has committed an eight-figure sum to building the new multipurpose facility.
Current custom manufacturing activities, by contrast, occupy resources freed by the sale of BASF's pharmaceutical business to Abbott Laboratories in 2000. BASF has long supplied standard APIs (such as ibuprofen), advanced intermediates, excipients and drug formulation support to the pharmaceutical industry through its Pharma Solutions business, which generated [euro]390 million last year, but its contract manufacturing activities were small.
